Lancer Evolution 8.5 Part I – Engine Build and Turbo

evo_engine_build_3

Whenever you are looking to build a monster of a car, you have to start with the heart.  The heart is the center of any project build and in our case our heart is a 2.2 liter balance of performance and reliability.  More specifically, a GSC Power-Division 2.2L XR-1.7 4G63T short block.  Thanks to Westboro Mitsubishi, we were able to obtain a brand new 4G63 MIVEC motor to hand over to the master mind behind GSC’s XR-1.7 motor package, Greg Caloudas, to begin over evolution of 8 to 8.5.

GSC’s motor package isn’t a basic bolt on power upgrade.  This is a complete package offered to serious owner’s looking to get the most out of the 4G63 without compromises.  Specific features include:

  • New Mitsubishi OEM 4G63 Short Block and piston squirters.
  • Power-Division 4340 Billet Crankshaft (31 pounds, 94mm Stroke) knife edged and balanced
  • Power-Division Custom Forged I-Beam Connecting Rods for 1.7 Rod Ratio
  • CP Pistons 85.5mm Bore, 9310 Wrist Pins, (10.0:1, 9.5:1, 8.5:1 Compression).  We went with 9:5:1.
  • Clevite Tri Metal Main Rod and Thrust Bearings
  • Power-Division Race Balance Shaft kit
  • Power-Division Race Main Stud Kit

A nice drool list for a bottom end, which means we couldn’t skimp out on the head.  Starting off with a stock Evolution 9 MIVEC head, we added GSC’s S2 cams and a complete valve train upgrade from Supertech.  A conservative head for a great motor build.

evo_engine_build_28

With the motor sorted out, it was time to match a new turbo kit with the performance capability of the XR-1.7.  Cue in Boost Logic’s SC 61 turbo kit.  Boost Logic is new to the Evolution world, but have a big reputation for making gobs of power in the Supra market.  Their SC 61 turbo kit shows right away the proof in the power making pudding, especially with features that compare to what the more expensive kits have for less money.  Features include:

  • Ceramic Heat Coated SS304 Tubular Manifold w/ true merge collector(1/2″ Thick flanges)
  • Tial 44mm Wastegate
  • SS304 Dump Tube
  • PTE SC50 T04E DBB Turbo w/ vband outlet
  • Boost Logic Water Line Kit(assembled with Aeroquip pushlock fittings)
  • 3″ SS304 Vband Downpipe
  • 3″ SS304 Vband Midpipe w/ flex joint(Bolts to stock catalytic converter)
  • 3″ Aluminum Intake Pipe 3″ K&N Filter
  • 2.5″ Mandrel Bent Aluminum Intercooler Pipe
  • 3 Ply Silicone Hoses and SS Hose Clamps
  • Boost Logic Oil Feed and Return Kit(Assembled with high quality SS line and AN fittings)
  • All nuts and bolts needed for installation
  • 10″ High Flow Fan

Installation of the entire setup was complex and will require professional help.  With our lack of wrenching skills we opted to go with pros to get everything installed correctly.  Atlantic Motorsports was the shop we went with to get the final installation done.  Being a MIVEC conversion, we had to grab a spare Evolution 9 main harness (engine harness) in order to get it all plugged up with our AEM EMS (we had to purchase a new unit to control MIVEC).  The conversion isn’t rocket science but does require a large portion of time to make sure all the details are taken care of.

With the basic installation out of the way, the proper motor break-in procedure needed to be performed: 2 heat cycles, then an oil change, then a low boost break-in, 200 miles of driving, and finally another oil change.  Atlantic Motorsports then put their focus on tuning the beast.  With a few clicks on the laptop and a ton of dyno pulls, the car was ready for action.  Final Power Output: 498 whp & 399.3 ft-lb @ 23psi.

Street Test
Of course street testing is fairly limited when testing peak performance.  Our intentions for this test was to bring out any reliability issues, lower rpm performance issues, or anything else worth mentioning that impact everyday use.  After our 3 days of street testing, a couple of items did come up:

  • Noticeable turbo lag with larger turbo vs. stock. Full boost came on closer to 4,000 rpm.  The motor definitely helped reduce turbo lag, but when you are using a larger turbo, lag is a common issue that is difficult to combat.  A smaller turbo will definitely cure this issue, which Boost Logic can provide within their SC 50 kit.
  • Maintaining speed limit and traction under boost.  The power is tremendous enough to break loose the tires, which requires a bit of driving skill to keep under control.
  • With the S2 cams, idle is a little rough but tolerable.  More time spent on the tune could smooth things out more.

With this amount of power at our control, the thought of being able to over take anything on the road was empowering.

Track Test
Our favorite place to test.  On track, we were able to start pushing the envelope of power to see how fast this new package was.  With a set of Nitto NT-01’s mounted and at full temp, we loosened the leash and hammered down the throttle.  At full throttle the car pushed our stomachs towards the back of our brains as we reached our 8,000 rpm limit.  Going through each gear, the once mild manor Evolution 8 was no more.  Full attention was needed to keep the car inline with counter steer and throttle input.   This beast was serious and we needed to respect it.  Entry and apex of each turn proved to be easy compared to the exit.  As soon as throttle was introduced into the party, the dam breaking surge of power would be too much for the level of grip and our abilities as drivers.   On long straight-aways the immense power propelled the Evo into supercar like state of top speed uncovering issues within our aero package (we had none!).   Realizing the insanity of the situation, the most logical step would have been to dial back boost and possibly switch to a smaller turbo size.  With each lap clicking by, the once logical idea slowly slipped further out of memoryville.

Our track day ended with grin’s on our faces, bbq’d front abs sensors, blown rear shocks, and an appreciation for having a chance to drive such a car on track.

Conclusion

Did we have to do this modification?  No.  Was it worth it?  Yes!  The XR-1.7 engine package is a phenomenal modification through and through.  We have logged in over 5,000 miles of abuse without fail.  With more time spent on the tune and possibly a smaller turbo, the car could be more useable for street and track use.  Until then we will continue to suffer with the epic amount of power and god like command of the street and of course, the track.

Rally Teams Take On Rugged Olympus Rally

olympus_rally_2

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. (March 18, 2009) – A technical challenge will greet the best rally teams in North America when they arrive at the 2009 Olympus Rally in Aberdeen, Washington for Round 3 of the Rally America championship April 18-19.

The rugged course laid out by organizers promises to test competitors’ range of skills, with roads that transition between twisty and tree-lined, to fast and flowing – with daunting drop-offs always a possibility should drivers end up off course.  The rally will be based in the ocean-side community of Aberdeen, with day-long Service Parks in Taholah on Saturday, April 18th and South Bend on Sunday, April 19th.

Last year’s temporary move of the Rally to the area surrounding Pomeroy, Washington in the Eastern part of the state made for a very fast and exciting rally.
“Pomeroy was a great location for the Olympus Rally in 2008, but we’re glad to be back near the Olympic and Capital forests,” stated Olympus Rally chairman Steve McQuaid recently.  “The springtime weather in Washington is extremely unpredictable at this time of year and everything from warm sunshine to blinding snow is certainly a possibility.”

This year’s Olympus Rally is expected to feature fierce competition, with the series’ battle of energy drinks competing for the top spot – each with 31 points. NOS Energy’s Andrew Comrie-Picard from Toronto, Canada driving his Mitsubishi Evolution IX and Rockstar Energy’s Tanner Foust from Capistrano Beach, California piloting a Libra Racing-built 2009 Mitsubishi Evolution X are currently tied for the early season points lead, followed by the Subaru Rally Team USA drivers – Bed Bull’s Travis Pastrana from Davidsonville, Maryland and Monster Energy’s Ken Block from Rancho Santa Fe, California — tied for second place overall in the Championship with 23 points. Close behind and tied for third place just one point back are Andi Mancin from Bielsko-Biala, Poland and Bill Bacon from Nashua, New Hampshire – both driving Mitsubishi Evo’s.

Rally America’s popular new Super Production class will also offer plenty of off-road excitement at the Pacific Northwest event with series regulars Matt Johnson from Apex, North Carolina and Dave Mirra from Greeneville, North Carolina – both driving Subaru WRX STI’s – and Piotr Wiktorczyk from Chicago, Illinois challenging them with his beautifully prepared Mitsubishi Evolution.
Typically, the Olympus event sees a very strong turnout of local rally teams as well as a good number of contestants in the two-wheel drive category. The marques typically represented at Rally America events include Subaru, Mitsubishi, Dodge, Ford and Volkswagen.

The legendary Olympus Rally is relatively new to the Rally America calendar having returned to the national series in 2007, but the event has a very rich history. It was first run as a national championship event in 1973 and was a favorite stop on the World Rally Championship calendar from 1986 to 1988. Rally racing legends including Rod Millen from New Zealand, Juha Kankkunen from Sweden and American rally ace John Buffum are among those who have claimed victories at the famed contest.

Rally car racing is considered by many as the extreme sport of automobile racing and it’s often described simply as “real cars, real roads, real fast.” This all-season motorsport sees drivers and their co-drivers taking modified street-legal cars to the absolute limit as they achieve blistering speeds over challenging courses that cover more than 100 miles of gravel, dirt or snow-covered roads.
A number of the top teams from the Rally America National Championship are also invited each year to compete in the Summer X Games, the world’s leading action sports event broadcast live on ABC and ESPN. Eight top rally teams have already been invited to this year’s contest in Los Angeles, California which takes place on August 2, 2009.

About Rally America
Based in Golden Valley, Minnesota, Rally America sanctions the premier rally racing series in the United States, the Rally America National Championship Series. In 2009, Rally America will conduct nine National Championship rally events at venues across the country, from Portland, Ore., to Bethel, Maine. Rally America competitors reach speeds of well over 100 mph in modified street-legal cars on natural-terrain courses of gravel, dirt or snow.
Additionally, through a partnership with ESPN, qualifying Rally America drivers are invited to compete in the Summer X Games, the annual leading action-sport event that is broadcast worldwide live on ABC and ESPN. For more information, visit www.rally-america.com

Mitsubishi i-MiEV Named World Green Car of the Year Finalist

CYPRESS, CA, March 9, 2009 –

Mitsubishi Motors’ zero-emission urban transport solution, the pure-electric i-MiEV, was named today as one of the top three contenders in the prestigious World Green Car of the Year competition. The innovative i-MiEV was chosen from a list of five first-round finalists-pared from an original list of more than 20 cars-by an international panel of 59 automotive journalists. The winner will be announced at the New York International Auto Show on April 9, 2009.

Mitsubishi’s combined expertise with automobiles and electronics strengthens its ability to create innovative transportation solutions. The i-MiEV is an important and timely example of what is possible from Mitsubishi going forward.

To be eligible for the 2009 World Green Car of the Year award, a vehicle had to be available in at least one major market during 2008. The vehicle could be in production or an experimental prototype with potential near-future application, provided that it was released for individual or press fleet evaluations in quantities of 10 or more during 2008. Tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption and use of a major advanced power plant technology (beyond engine componentry) aimed specifically at increasing the vehicle’s environmental responsibility, were all taken into consideration.

Scheduled to go on sale in the Japanese market this summer and currently undergoing U.S. testing with Pacific Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison, the i-MiEV offers an intelligent combination of useful performance with small physical and carbon footprints, plus a roomy interior for four adults and a sensible range of upwards of 100 miles from its advanced lithium-ion battery pack.

The lithium-ion battery pack consists of 22 modules, each one consisting of four cells that can be installed in either a vertical or transverse position under the i-MiEV’s floor. The high-performance batteries are manufactured by Lithium Energy Japan, a joint venture of GS Yuasa, Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors.

Flexible charging scenarios allow fast re-charging, requiring just 30 minutes to reach 80 percent of battery capacity. Its onboard charger also conveniently handles 110 or 220V for at-home charging.

Joining the Mitsubishi i-MiEV as finalists are the Honda FCX Clarity and Toyota iQ.

Mitsubishi Receives “Best New Technology” Award for its Super All-Wheel Control System

CYPRESS, Calif., March 4, 2009 –

Mitsubishi Motors continues to deliver uncompromising performance and industry-leading technology to consumers, capturing prestigious awards along the way. The latest honor comes from the independent Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), which recently named Mitsubishi’s advanced Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system as the “Best New Technology” for 2009 and is standard on the acclaimed Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

“Mitsubishi’s grasp of advanced all-wheel drive technology comes in part from many successful years in the Dakar and World Rally Championship where the demands far exceed those for a street car,” said Mitsubishi Motors North America Executive Vice President of Operations John Koenig. “The best news is that so much of what we’ve learned from rally competition works to our advantage on the streets and circuit as well.”

The Mitsubishi S-AWC system was chosen from a list of seven entries for the “Best New Technology” award, and judged by a panel of AJAC members with specific technical qualifications who regularly report on industry engineering and technical trends.

“The AJAC Best New Technology award was established to allow a group of technical writers to identify new and innovative technologies of significant benefit to the consumer,” explained Canadian Car of the Year and Technology Award Chairman Richard Russell. “The significance of the Best New Technology award has been growing steadily over the past few years as has the degree of rigor to which entries are submitted.”

The S-AWC is not just another all-wheel drive system, but an advanced vehicle dynamics control system that reads and reflects driver intent in real time. S-AWC regulates drive torque at each wheel by controlling a network of dynamic handling technologies, including Active Center Differential (ACD), Active Yaw Control (AYC) rear differential, Active Stability Control (ASC) and Sport ABS brakes.

The ACD uses an electronically controlled hydraulic multi-plate clutch to vary the front/rear distribution of torque up to a ratio of 50:50 during acceleration and deceleration to improve overall traction and cornering.

The AYC rear differential enables the electronic control of torque between the left and right rear wheels to assist cornering. Importantly, AYC also limits the yaw moment acting on the vehicle as traction conditions change. The system also employs a helical-type limited-slip front differential that constantly biases torque to the wheel with more traction.

Mastered by the S-AWC system, ASC works in concert with Sport ABS to further control vehicle behavior by regulating torque transfer to each wheel through braking when necessary. ASC may also be turned off for track driving.

The entire system is enhanced by choosing one of three modes to match road surface conditions: tarmac, gravel or snow. When employed, these components allow for heightened safety and unparalleled driver control.

Warren Tracy’s Busted Knuckle is a total gas

An inspirational story for those in the automotive industry.
——————————————————

By T. Foster Jones
Try to picture the swoosh before the shoe, the apple before the, well, Apple.

This is the story of a business that began as a logo. There was no building. There was no merchandise. Heck, there was no idea of what kind of merchandise there would be if there was merchandise. Just a logo, a name and a man with an entrepreneurial dream.

The man is Costco member Warren Tracy. The logo is a wrench-wielding hand with a bandage on the index finger. The name is The Busted Knuckle Garage. And the dream? To run a business he could call his own. In sort of a “design it and they will come” approach, he created a successful business, backwards.

But, we’re getting ahead of ourselves, just as Tracy did. Let’s dial back 13 or so years, to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, a place accessible only by foot, by raft or on the back of
a mule. It’s hardly the place you would expect automotive inspiration to strike. Yet it did, and, as long as we’re using automotive terms, the inspiration that struck Tracy came in reverse.

In 1996, Tracy had been living on and working as manager of the Phantom Ranch guest ranch for about 10 years. A selfdescribed “gear head,” who had started twisting wrenches as a teen, he woke up one night with a vision. He made a quick sketch of an injured hand holding a wrench and then went back to sleep.

For someone with an entrepreneurial itch, someone who understood the power of branding from his experience marketing Phantom Ranch, the doodle presented something of a conundrum. What did it represent? It haunted him, nagged at him. He eventually trademarked it, but a year later the logo was still dangling there, its meaning just out of reach.

It was in 1997 that Tracy, whose career path has also included mortgage banking, delivering yachts and operating a bicycle shop, met a man making faux-antique distressed
wooden signs. He decided to commission some featuring his design, along with the name “The Busted Knuckle Garage,” and posted an ad in an auto magazine.

“We sold 100 the first month,” Tracy says. Encouraged, Tracy struck a deal shortly thereafter with an herbologist, a regular ranch patron. She had developed a muscle-easing salve she was looking to sell, something that Tracy thought would be perfect for an aching mechanic. They marketed it under the Busted Knuckle brand, and “it just took off,”Tracy says. “We knew we were on to something.” What the logo was and what the logo meant were beginning to come together.

Tracy quit his job at Phantom Ranch. He mortgaged his house, ran his credit cards to the limit. He sold the cars and motorcycles he had built and collected. He marketed more skin-care products. The logo made its appearance on signs and T-shirts and hats. Tracy began attending car shows and automotive supply stores across the country, hawking the brand and the growing line of products.

Combining the marketing and smallbusiness lessons he’d learned from his various occupations, over the past 10 years Tracy has built The Busted Knuckle Garage into a lifestyle
brand that sells more than 250 different items—from clothing, garage and home décor and gifts to collectibles and car-care products—to fellow wrench twisters.

Through direct sales at the Busted Knuckle Web site (www.bustedknucklegarage.com), automotive catalogs and national chain stores, Tracy, who finally opened an actual brick-and-mortar retail location in 2005 in Prescott, Arizona, has created something unique.

While the logo and the brand became a business for Tracy, they represent myriad things to his customers, resonating with everyone from hard-core mechanics to wannabes. He built the business around what the logo meant, rather than the other way around.

And in a final twist, guys aren’t the only ones buying Busted Knuckle products. Tracy says that 70 percent of retail sales come from women buying gifts for men. “Who is my market?” he asks. He’s still at a loss to explain. “We let customers define it, as it relates to their experience.”

Ken Block wins again at 100 Acre Wood

ken_block

Subaru Rally Team USA driver Ken Block took the win at the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood in southern Missouri this weekend.

“I love the flow of the stages of this event,” said Block at the finish. “I love the high speeds.”

Block’s flat-out style is well-suited to this fast and flowing event and he’s proven tough to beat here. He and co-driver Alex Gelsomino have now won this event four times in a row.

NOS Energy’s Andrew Comrie-Picard finished in second place in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX after a tight battle with Rockstar Energy’s Tanner Foust in his new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.

By midday on Saturday, Comrie-Picard and co-driver Robbie Durant led Foust and co-driver Chrissie Beavis by just a tenth of a second, but they extended the gap as the weather worsened during the final stages of the contest.

“I feel awesome,” said Comrie-Picard. “The car was perfect and our Yokohama winter tires gave us an edge when the snow started coming down.”

It was Foust and Beavis’ first event in their new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X and Foust said he was able to pick up the pace as he adjusted to the new car.

“It’s good to be on the podium,” said Tanner. “The car has great potential.”

After two rounds in the Rally America Championship, Comrie-Picard and Foust are now tied for the championship lead.

“It’s really exciting to be at the top of the points with Tanner – I’m really enthusiastic for this season,” said Comrie-Picard.

In fourth place overall were Bill Bacon and co-driver Peter Watt in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, while Polish driver Andi Mancin and co-driver Maciej Wislawski rounded out the top five.

Former Production GT champion Matt Johnson and co-driver Jeremy Wimpey took the win in the popular new Super Production class, with a finish of sixth-place overall in their Subaru WRX.

“I love this event, it’s awesome,” said Johnson. “You just put the hammer down and hang on.”

The duo overhauled Subaru Rally Team USA’s Dave Mirra and co-driver Derek Ringer for the class win on the second day of the contest. Mirra and Ringer had a very strong start, running as high as third place overall early in the rally.

Super Production is a new class for 2009 that features minimally modified, production-based cars.

The two-wheel drive win went to Burak Tuglu and co-driver Carrie Wilburn in their 2001 Ford Focus.

Subaru Rally Team USA driver Travis Pastrana started strong but found himself out of the hunt after a rollover on Day 1. He and co-driver Christian Edstrom were unharmed, but were unable to continue. Pastrana had said earlier he was ready to win or crash trying to keep Block out of the top spot.

This event also serves as a Regional Rally championship event for 2008. Regional class champions from coast to coast are invited to race head-to-head in the foothills of the Ozarks for he Regional Rally Championship. In Open class, the winning driver was Arkadiusz Gruszka in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, while the Group 2 winner was driver Chris Greenhouse in a Dodge Neon.

The rally took place through the scenic Ozark foothills of southern Missouri. The smooth gravel course is fast and flowing, and sees some of the highest speeds in the series.

The weather is the real wildcard at this contest and the 2009 running proved no exception. The warm, early spring temperatures that greeted competitors at the Friday start turned cold and there was blinding snow as teams crossed the finish line. The contest was ultimately cut short by the brutal weather; the final stage was cancelled after the conditions deteriorated so much that it was deemed impassable.

All results are considered provisional pending final administrative processes.

Rally car racing is considered the extreme sport of automobile racing and is often described simply as “real cars, real roads, real fast.” This all-season motorsport sees drivers and their co-drivers take modified road cars to the limit as they achieve blistering speeds over courses that cover more than 100 miles of gravel, dirt or snow-covered roads.

Top teams in the series are also invited to compete in the Summer X Games, the leading action sports event broadcast live on ABC and ESPN. Eight top teams have already been invited to this August’s contest.

Next, the championship moves west to Washington state for the Olympus Rally, April 18 – 19.
