ATI Super Damper for Mini Cooper Engines

ATI Performance Products is proud to introduce its Super Damper for the Mini Cooper standard and S engines. P/N 917992, has OEM serpentine belt locations, and is very close to OEM size. This damper is compatible with Mini Cooper models from 2001 through the 2006. Factory dampers and non-dampened pulleys offer no protection to high RPM engines and modified engines. The ATI Super Damper provides balanced dampening of torsional crankshaft vibrations through all RPM ranges. This damper comes with laser-etched timing marks and exceeds SFI 18.1 Safety Certification, for competition use.

ATI Performance Products, located in Baltimore, MD, specializes in producing and maintaining high performance products for street and strip applications. Over the years ATI has earned a reputation for its cutting edge technology, attention to detail, and rigorous testing under race conditions. By staying true to these basic principles, ATI has built a loyal customer base many of whom still use parts purchased from ATI in the ‘80s.

Rally battle set for Missouri at Rally America’s Round 2

image006

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (Feb. 16) – Subaru Rally Team USA driver Ken Block has a target on his back heading into Round 2 of the Rally America championship, the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, in southern Missouri Feb. 27 – 28.

The fast and flowing course suits Block’s flat-out style and he’s proven tough to beat at this early spring event. The event was the scene of the driver’s first national win in 2006, and he’s taken the top spot every year since then.

But it won’t be easy. Block’s teammate Travis Pastrana issued a challenge even as he was celebrating his victory at Round 1 last month in Michigan, saying he wasn’t prepared to let Block take another win in Missouri.

Currently second in the points, Rockstar Energy driver Tanner Foust is expected to debut a powerful new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X rally car for this event, while NOS Energy’s Andrew “ACP” Comrie-Picard is looking for another solid finish after he claimed the third spot on the podium at Round 1.

Polish driver Andi Mancin says he has upgraded his rally car in order to be more competitive for his third American event and he could also threaten for the win.

The new Super Production class should also feature some fierce competition. Subaru Rally Team USA’s newest member, Dave Mirra, is expected to debut a car built for the new class, while former two-time Production-GT champion Matt Johnson is looking for a comeback after a tough first round.

A number of veteran two-wheel drive competitors are also expected to attend, making for exciting battles throughout the field.

The event also serves as a Regional championship event for 2008. Regional champions from coast to coast are invited to race head-to-head in the foothills of the Ozarks to see who will claim the cup.

The rally takes place through the scenic Ozark foothills of southern Missouri. The course is fast, tight, and twisty, on roads known as some of the best in the nation for rallying.

It is early spring in the area at this time of year, but all bets are off when it comes to the weather. Last year saw a freak storm blanket the region with a thick layer of ice in the days before the rally. Teams must come prepared for anything.

Rally car racing is considered the extreme sport of automobile racing and is often described simply as “real cars, real roads, real fast.” This all-season motorsport sees drivers and their co-drivers take modified road cars to the limit as they achieve blistering speeds over courses that cover more than 100 miles of gravel, dirt or snow-covered roads.

Top teams in the series are also invited to compete in the Summer X Games, the leading action sports event broadcast live on ABC and ESPN. Eight top teams have already been invited to this August’s contest.

About Rally America
Based in Golden Valley, Minn., Rally America sanctions the premier rally racing series in the United States, the Rally America National Championship Series. In 2009, Rally America will conduct nine National Championship events at venues across the country, from Olympia, Wash., to Bethel, Maine.

D1 Grand Prix Update

LOS ANGELES (February 6, 2009) – D1GP USA (www.d1gpusa.com), the motorsports industry’s premier drifting series, announced today its judging procedures for the 2009 season will include the use of a comprehensive telemetry based data acquisition and video system to provide a more accurate and transparent method for scoring. Dubbed the D1GP USA PRO 1, the system will provide drivers with a level scoring field that dramatically increases the accuracy of the scoring process. D1GP USA has also announced its head judges and Competition staff for the series. The head judges will include “Drift King” Keiichi Tsuchiya, D1 Grand Prix, Option Magazine & Tokyo Auto Salon founder Daijiro Inada and TV announcer and former driver Manabu Suzuki. Terence Jenkins will act as the SVP of Operations and the events Competition Director while Chiaki Goto will serve as the events Technical Director.

D1GP USA PRO 1
Based on Racelogic’s highly successful “DriftBox”, the D1GP USA PRO 1 utilizes new proprietary algorithms and is able to measure a driver’s drift angle with 0.5 degree of accuracy, speed within 0.1mph and lateral g loads within 0.01g. This data is calculated 10 times per second and transmitted from the competition vehicle via telemetry directly to the scoring table. D1GP USA will also utilize the Racelogic Video VBOX system. The Video VBOX is a high quality solid-state video recorder combined with a GPS data logger and real-time graphics engine. This will record the action from inside the vehicle during competition and overlay the PlayStation style graphics on screen showing drift angle, speed and g-force loads.

Scoring
Scores for drift angle, speed and lateral g-forces will be taken from the data provided by the D1 GP USA PRO 1, with each representing a large percentage of the overall score. Line will be scored by the judges along with the final component – style – the only subjective criteria determined by the average of the three D1 Judges’ scores.

The Judges
Each D1GP USA event will be scored by a three judge panel, consisting of two appointed American judges (not yet named) and one of the following head judges:

Keiichi Tsuchiya
A professional driver and also known as “Drift King” otherwise as Dorikin for his nontraditional use of drifting in non-drifting racing events, and his role in popularizing drifting as a motorsport. He is also known for touge (mountain pass) driving. Tsuchiya will be the head judge at the Miami, Philadelphia and Chicago D1GP USA events.

Daijiro Inada
Inada may be the largest celebrity in Japanese automotive culture. He is most notably the founder of Option Magazine and its video spin-off series, creator of the D1 Grand Prix series, and founder of the Tokyo Auto Salon, which is the largest automotive event in the world. Daijiro Inada is the heart of Japanese automotive culture and will be an alternate head judge for the D1GP USA series.

Manabu Suzuki
A former driver, journalist, sport announcer and radio and TV presenter for the automotive industry, Suzuki competed in the Formula Toyota and Saurus Cup until the mid-nineties. He became well known for working with Option as a writer and presenter for the magazine’s offshoot video magazine, Video Option and Drift Tengoku. Suzuki is best known as one of the three original key judges (the other being Keiichi Tsuchiya and Manabu Orido) in the D1 Grand Prix series.

Competition Staff
D1GP USA has also named Terence Jenkins and Chiaki Goto, two of the most experienced people in the world of drifting, to its on-site personnel. Terence Jenkins will take the reigns as D1GP USA’s Competition Director. Jenkins founded Lateral G Racing and along with his driver Samuel Hubinette, the team went on to become crowned the first ever championship winning American drift team. Jenkins went on to form the WDC and since 2005 he has provided drift exhibitions, promoting the sport of drifting at major Indy Racing League events. Additionally, Terence ran Octane TV, a cable TV On Demand, Broadband and Mobile network focusing on automotive programming. Within three years Terence had developed a loyal audience of over 11 million. The longest running Octane TV show was “Drift Scene” which he dedicated to both Pro and Amateur drivers in the sport of drifting. Chiaki Goto will serve as D1GP USA’s Technical Director. A former endurance racing champion and Director of the 2003 JIC Magic Drift team, Goto brings his experience with drifting in Japan over to the United States to help support the growth of D1GP USA.

“In traditional racing the first person across the finish line wins, but drifting competitions are not so cut and dry. With the D1GP USA PRO 1 system, we are finally able to quantify many aspects of a drift and remove the subjectivity from the scoring process,” said Rich Goodwin, president of D1GP USA. “We also feel that we have put together a very solid team of the best known and most well-respected industry professionals to bring D1GP USA’s competitors and fans the best possible experience.”

Subaru Rally Team USA driver Travis Pastrana scored the first victory of the 2009 season with a decisive win at Sno*Drift in northern Michigan.

pastedgraphic

Atlanta, Michigan (February 1, 2009) –  Pastrana and co-driver Christian Edstrom built a healthy lead from the start, ending Day 1 with a 52-second lead over challenger Tanner Foust. By the end of the contest, the duo had extended the gap to a minute and 49 seconds.

“It’s a great way to start the season, with points under my belt,” said Pastrana. “But every mailbox looked like a deer on that last stage.”

Deer have become something of a theme for Pastrana and Edstrom at Sno*Drift. Last year at this event, Pastrana and Edstrom lost their lead when they struck a deer on the second-to-last stage and were unable to finish.

Rockstar Energy’s Foust and co-driver Chrissie Beavis picked up the pace throughout the event as they became more familiar with the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon they were campaigning for the first time at this event.

“Getting used to a new car takes time and there will be that learning curve for us again at the next round,” said Foust, who is expected to campaign a Mitsubishi at 100 Acre Wood in February. “But I’m excited about this year.”

Third place went to NOS Energy team of Andrew “ACP” Comrie-Picard and Marc Goldfarb, who overcame handling problems with their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X to pull into the podium position late on Day 2.

“It was a classic snow rally,” said Comrie-Picard at the finish. “We stayed in it and didn’t make any mistakes.”

The event was a heartbreaker for Bill Bacon and Bill Watt who had been in strong contention for a podium position when they spun off the road late on the second day. They were able to finish the contest but wound up in fifth-place overall, behind Polish driver Andi Mancin and co-driver Maciej Wislawski.

The contest was also a disappointment for Pastrana’s Subaru Rally Team USA teammates Ken Block and co-driver Alex Gelsomino. They were battling for the lead Friday when they went off the road, then suffered mechanical problems that ended their rally. Winter events have not typically been kind to the duo; the conditions don’t suit Block’s flat-out style.

“Ice and snow rallies are lotteries,” said Gelsomino. “We don’t want to mess with this stuff anymore.”

Pastrana partnered again for this contest with Edstrom after the co-driver’s year-long hiatus from the sport. His 2008 co-driver Derek Ringer is competing alongside Subaru Rally Team USA’s newest member Dave Mirra.

Although Mirra is contesting this event in an Open class Subaru, he is expected to begin a campaign for the new Super Production title at the next round, when his new car is ready.

Bryan Pepp and Jerry Stang scored the first national victory in the new Super Production class in a Subaru WRX. The class features lightly modified performance vehicles and is expected to be hotly contested this season.

“It feels pretty darn good to be here,” said Pepp. “We managed to come out ahead by being consistent and steady and staying in control; that’s what it takes.”

Chris Greenhouse and Don DeRose took the win in the new combined two-wheel drive class after mechanical trouble put an end to a promising start by young driver Kyle Sarasin and co-driver Alexander Kihurani. They finished second in class.

Sno*Drift is the first stop on the 2009 Rally America National Championship. It is the only winter weather event in the national championship. The championship moves to Missouri for Round 2, the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, February 27-28.
